Minilab returns to South Ken Kids Festival!
We had a super day at South Ken Kids Festival last year (check it out here!), and when we heard that this year was the 20th anniversary of the yearly festival, we couldn’t wait to return. This year, South Ken Kids took place from the 13th-19th of November, and saw thousands of little artists descend upon the French Institute in South Kensington…
Welcome to Artie’s World
On Sunday 19th, we took over the beautiful, colourful Quentin Blake library just around the corner from the French Institute. For our workshop we welcomed kids aged 4-10 to come along and discover how simple shapes make up the world around us. How do we do this? We’ve got two children’s apps to explain! While some little ones chased down a poorly behaved monster in Artie’s Magic Pencil, others loved diving into the Ocean Odyssey and Savannah Safari map packs in Artie’s World. Particular favourites included the clownfish, shark and the lion.
One of our key learning points incorporated into Artie’s adventures is that drawing can be easy. There’s no need to stare at a blank page in fear – you can draw anything using just a few shapes. To demonstrate, we asked our little team to colour in simple outlines of Artie and take note of which shapes had been used to colour him in. Then it was time for the really fun part: cut out creations.
Back to reality!
By the end of the session we had created a whole menagerie of strange creatures made from simple shapes – from frogs to mice to robots. We hope that the concentration and motor skills encouraged by the Artie apps can translate into the real world for every child that plays them. If your child has created any artwork inspired by our apps, we’d love to hear from you! Send them over to [email protected]
A huge thank you to the South Ken Kids team who made the day (and indeed the whole festival) into a success, and the French Institute. That brings us to the end of our Autumn event schedule… bring on winter! Keep up to date on our social media – @minilabstudios on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
